Institutional Research, Innovation, & Strategy (IRIS) in partnership with the Office of the Provost administers CIF Blue, an online course evaluation tool. CIF Blue collects student feedback to enhance teaching methods and course content across the university, supporting continuous improvement in pedagogy and curriculum through robust analysis and reporting.
The University of Notre Dame has maintained a long-standing commitment to discover, implement, and refine methods for the evaluation, mentoring, and improvement of teaching practices among its faculty. In September 2015, former Provost Thomas Burish formed the Ad Hoc Committee on the Evaluation of Teaching (AHCET) and charged it with reviewing the procedures and instruments used to support the evaluation and mentoring of teaching at Notre Dame.

CIF Blue is an essential resource aimed at bolstering educational quality and efficacy through detailed Course Instructor Feedback. This system performs three vital functions: formative feedback, which provides insights to instructors for the improvement of teaching methods and course delivery; evaluative feedback, contributing to comprehensive assessments of instructors' effectiveness; and analytical feedback, aiding the institution in identifying key factors associated with perceptions of effective teaching. Together, these functions ensure that CIF Blue is not only a tool for individual instructor development but also a strategic asset for enhancing academic excellence and accountability across the university.
